Day 134: Hiker Breakfast

Mile 1733-1744

Ahhh, a nice night in a well-manicured lawn -- despite the road noise from I-5 which earplugs cancelled out. We had a splendid sleep on the back lawn of Callahans lodge. After sleeping in a scosh, we settled down to the hiker breakfast. (Compliments of Daypack!)  Hawkeye and I chowed down on over hard eggs and all-you-could eat pancakes.  We called it quits after 8, not wanting to sabotage our day of hiking.

We piled into Daypack's room for an hour or two while waiting for our generous friend Maverick to grab us in his rental car and drive us up trail to the spot that I got on with Kyle and Natalie two days back. We watched the Olympics, blogged a bit and enjoyed some good laughs as always before parting ways.

Hawkeye has bought a bunch of new equipment and gotten rid of lots of stuff in an effort to lighten his load and hopefully reduce the foot pain he has been experiencing.  I’ve been a big proponent of his “ultralight revolution,” and we enjoyed an evening of trying out new stuff and comparing gear.  Yeah yeah, I know, it’s just gear and we’ve been talking about it for months now… But whatever, I like it.

A huge bat swooped by our heads as we were finishing up dinner to an enormous full moon.  It landed by our tents and stood around for a bit before swooping off.  We looked up some common bats in Oregon and settled on one that seemed to fit the bill of having a 12-14” wingspan.  It’s official name? “Big brown bat.’  Case closed.
